Painting a self-portrait can be fun, but the challenge is capturing the likeness of yourself. 

Here’s How to Paint a Self-Portrait:

First, Draw A Self-Portrait on Paper Using a Pencil and Ruler. 

Self-portraits are tricky. There’s nothing worse than a smiling plastic face staring back at you. So, how can you paint a realistic self-portrait? First, draw a self-portrait on paper using a pencil and ruler. Then, paint the portrait on a small canvas (about 6 x 8 inches). When you draw a self-portrait, you focus on what is in front of your face. Your head is the focal point, and your drawing should show your body as a whole. It looks better if you focus on one part of your drawing at a time. Draw what you see clearly, focusing on proportions and adding detail. Side and front views usually work best.

Next, Make A Tracing of That Image on The Canvas. 

Next, make a copy of the tracing of the portrait you want to paint. Then, tape this tracing to the canvas. After taping the tracing to the canvas, carefully trace the contours of the photo. When you are finished tracing, remove the tracing from the canvas. Then take a piece of canvas, tape it to the back of the canvas, and tape it to the upper part of the tracing that you previously taped to the canvas.

At This Point, You Can Erase the Pencil Lines or Paint Over Them. 

You’ve completed your sketch, and now that you’ve done that, you’re free to erase your line work. As you erase, you’ll begin to see your portrait take form. As you continue painting, you’ll start to see where things might need to be adjusted, and that’s where you’ll start adding in more lines. If you’re painting on a dark canvas, the paint you use will likely bleed through—but if you use light-colored paint, you’ll see the areas where the paint bleeds. Either way, painting your portrait is the fun part!

Continue Working on The Canvas, Painting Over the Tracing with A Brush or Palette Knife. 

Next, use a darker-colored pencil to darken the outer edges of the outline. Using a broad paintbrush, paint the area inside the outline, leaving your facial features white. Then, use the pencil to erase the white shapes lightly. Add details to the face using a fine paintbrush and a darker-colored pencil.

Mud sculptures are an art form best known to cave dwellers, and as a decorative art form, they have been around for thousands of years. However, it’s a niche art form that is experiencing a surge in popularity. Many art lovers are discovering that mud can be molded and manipulated into a shape that mimics almost anything. The mud is allowed to dry, be painted, shaded, or left in its natural state.

As an artist, the clay you choose for your project is one of your most important decisions. Organic or synthetic clay? Two different materials, two completely different looks. Is there anything in between? The issue with organic mud is that it can be temperamental to work with, and it’s usually much more expensive. Synthetic clay is easy to work with but less expensive. The installation is the brainchild of artist Lauren Broderick, who has been creating giant cedar shingles for over 15 years. The concept for the piece developed after Broderick fell in love with a 150-year-old house in rural Pennsylvania. The structure had suffered years of neglect, and it was about to be torn down. 

Broderick decided to save the wood but quickly realized that the space was too small to house such a large collection of cedar shingles. After searching for an alternative, Broderick came across an article describing how cedar shingles were used on large outdoor structures, such as barns, sheds, and gazebos, and how she could make one herself. Broderick was captivated by the idea of creating her own version of these traditional structures. After scouring the Internet, she found one source that provided all the needed information. She quickly learned that cedar shingles were incredibly heavy.

Andy Goldsworthy’s clay sculpture named Refuge d’Art (2005) snakes up the wall within the French Alps’ shelter. This work of art was created as part of a project at an art school the sculptor attended—the piece was 13 meters long! Since then, the piece has been exhibited worldwide, including a 2014 show at Versailles.

Do you love painting with watercolor? Drawing with colored pencils? Working with acrylics? Do you enjoy sculptures made from clay or paper mâché? Perhaps you want to create jewelry or crafts out of recycled materials. No matter what type of art you have a passion for, discovering your unique style is easy as long as you can self-analyze your hobbies. The tricky part is holding on to it.

• Identify Your Values. 

What is important to you? What do you care about? What do you want to do in your life? Everyone has their unique style but discovering and expressing that style can be difficult. However, identifying your values and using them as a foundation from which to build your style can help you discover art that speaks to your personality. Identifying your values is a crucial step to discovering your art style. Many artists struggle with choosing a particular style or genre. They try various mediums, techniques, and subjects and have a tough time settling on something they enjoy. They waste years on art projects they don’t fully embrace simply because the art style doesn’t hold any value to them.
